Director of Press and Communications

The National Theatre is looking for a strategic, creative and experienced communications professional to lead our Press and Communications teams.

Based on London’s South Bank we create up to 25 new productions each year, and our activity extends right across the UK and around the world. It ranges from landmark stage events such as Angels in America, currently playing on Broadway, to ambitious projects with young people and communities, such as 2016’s we’re here because we’re here and this year’s Public Acts: Pericles. Our artistic programme aims for excellence, resonance and breadth, attracting world-class artists and responding to the place and time we live in. We are continually developing our digital reach, which includes cinema broadcasts, on-demand streaming to schools, VR and immersive storytelling. We aim to reach the widest possible audience, including outside of London and beyond the traditional theatre sector.

Reporting to the Director of Audiences, you will develop and deliver a communications strategy to raise the profile and reputation of the National Theatre, telling the story of our mission and work in a clear and compelling way. You will build relationships with key external and internal stakeholders and take a focussed approach in building connections across the cultural, media, political and education sectors, extending our influence and helping address key issues for the industry.

The successful candidate will bring significant experience in a senior communications role and strong awareness of all media. You will have a strong history of leading teams, developing dynamic and effective communications strategies to advance the reputation of an organisation.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver who will support the National Theatre in identifying the widest possible field of qualitied candidates and assist in their assessment against the requirements for the role.
