We are looking for an Executive Assistant to our Executive Director at the National Theatre.

This role would be ideal for someone who wants a career in theatre and is keen to develop their skill and contacts through working at the heart of the country’s leading theatre with the leadership team. An individual with experience of project management, administration, diary management, preferably with an arts background would be in a strong position – but we are flexible and interested in those from other artforms and sectors with transferable skill sets. The ability to think laterally, act resourcefully and represent the ED with integrity, and good humour, is key.

 

The role sits within the Directors’ Office which is the support network for the Director (Rufus Norris), Executive Director (Kate Varah), Deputy Artistic Director (Clint Dyer), and Chief Operating Officer (Liz Fosbury). It is the first port of call for visiting artists, creative teams, and the National Theatre’s Chair of the Board and Board members. The Director of Producing and the Producing team also sit within the office. The department’s remit is wide and varied, often taking on unexpected tasks and responsibilities. The Executive team have complex and fast-moving schedules, which require experienced and proactive support and management.  All visitors and enquiries, external or internal, are to be handled with efficiency and in a friendly manner, whilst maintaining a professional approach.

 

The Executive Assistant to the Executive Director (EAED) will provide proactive, discreet, senior-level support within a busy office and theatre environment. As an engaged and diplomatic communicator, they would act as first point of contact for all matters relating to the ED, working in partnership with colleagues in the Directors’ Office, Senior Leadership Team, and more widely across the organisation (including the Board of Trustees), as well as with artists and external stakeholders. The EAED would be trusted to lead and / or support on projects as required, and act as an effective bridge for all relevant communications to ensure Executive awareness and involvement as necessary.

 

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Exceptional administrative skills, showing ability to work with autonomy and flexibility, to safeguard sensitive and confidential information accordingly, and prioritise accordingly

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective and resilient relationships at all levels and with key stakeholders while demonstrating tact and diplomacy

  • A high standard of written English, and experience of producing fast, accurate work to a strong level of presentation, with keen attention to detail, and ability to draft correspondence independently

  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with an ability to work calmly and effectively

  • Demonstrable ability to be resourceful, proactive, and be a skilled problem-solver with a collaborative work ethic
