We are looking for an Associate Dramaturg to join the National Theatre New Work Team.
The Associate Dramaturg supports the New Work department in identifying, attracting and engaging with emerging theatre artists and their work. The Associate Dramaturg will be involved in play development and literary management, and in working with writers and directors from idea towards production, script to stage. The Associate Dramaturg will read scripts and be called on to assess a wide range of material, to offer reports and feedback, to engage in close artistic conversations with early to mid-career artists, and to support the process of developing proposals and scripts towards commission and production.
The role requires close work with writers and directors particularly at earlier stages of their careers, and engagement with other strands of work at the NT including Learning. As well as being able to assess and forecast the trajectory of work for our Slate and stages, the Dramaturg will offer an articulate and informed dramaturgical engagement for emerging artists, forging connections to the opportunities within the New Work Department and on NT’s stages.
Blending experience in script analysis, show-making, and the commissioning process with an understanding of the producing context and repertoire of the NT, the role of the Dramaturg encompasses extensive reading, show coverage in London and beyond, workshop support, and project development. Relying on a comprehensive working knowledge of the UK’s new writing ecology, the Dramaturg will find and field the most promising material and artists with a view to enriching our slate and stages with their work
The successful candidate will have the following:
- Demonstrable experience of literary development with a track record as an incisive, communicative and assiduous reader and assessor of scripts, shows, workshops and proposals
- Experience of the development process, working with a range of artists, supporting scale projects from idea to production
- Outstanding communication skills in providing feedback and analysis on scripts, workshop sharings and productions
- A working knowledge of the new writing landscape not only in London but across the UK, and the National Theatre’s role within it, and a familiarity with producers of new work of different scales, non-building-based and regional alike
- Previous experience of developing new work into production, building creative teams with writers, directors or other theatre makers
If that sounds like you, this may be the role for you!
