We are looking for a Finance Director to join the National Theatre Finance Team.

We are looking for a Finance Director to play an integral role in leading the National Theatre, ensuring our finances are carefully managed to support financial sustainability and our resources are deployed effectively to match the scale of our ambitions.

You will report to the Chief Operating Officer, sit on the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and lead a well-developed and effective finance team of 38 that is centrally positioned in the organisation and works with all departments.

This opportunity comes at an exciting time for the National Theatre. Our audience numbers have returned to pre-pandemic levels, our digital offer was turbo charged during the pandemic and continues to grow and our global reach is at record levels with increasing ambition. Despite the financial challenges presented during and following the pandemic, the real term cut to our state subsidy of 53% over the last 14 years and the  on-going challenge of high inflation to our financial model, we have confidence in our financial outlook. Our five year Entertain and Inspire Strategy and accompanying business plan identifies a glide path to deliver a break even revenue model by 2026/27, with sufficient financial resources to support until that point and current unrestricted reserves at their target level of £15m.

In addition to this break-even revenue model challenge, we have a concurrent urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure of our Grade II* listed building to ensure our facilities are fit-for-purpose for world-class artists to make their best work. Two key steps forward in delivering to this challenge are a UK Government capital grant of £26.4m announced in the Spring 2024 Budget, and the launch of our £125m revenue and capital funding campaign, Stories Start Here, the most ambitious campaign in our history.

The Finance Director will play a key role in supporting this funding challenge, leading the on-going management of our resources to ensure the NTs long term financial sustainability, whilst ensuring sufficient resources to meet our key objectives, including our artistic and audience reach ambitions.

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Qualified accountant with a strong understanding and experience of statutory accounts, financial controls and procedures, tax and other financial regulatory compliance, management accounting and complex management reporting

  • Experience in financial planning and strategy for a complex organisation, including risk management (ideally within the charity sector)

  • Experience setting and monitoring of budgets and longer-term financial plans, and development of management information and reporting tools to monitor and explain progress against financial plans and assess the organisations’ financial health

  • Experience presenting complex financial information to Boards and other non-financial users

  • A positive, inclusive and collegial leadership style with the ability to inspire, coach and motivate others to deliver excellent and efficient services

If that sounds like you, this may be the role for you!
