We are looking for a Head Textile Artist (Maternity Cover) to join the Costume Department on a 12 month fixed contract.

 

The Textile Studio of the NT is where a designer’s ideas are brought to life through the depth and texture added. Sampling fabrics, colours and textile effects is one of the first processes that a designer will want to get started on when they begin work on a show.

 

The Textile team respond to ideas and possibilities presented to them, often elaborating and creating new effects in the process, they work very closely with the rest of the costume production departments; Costume cutters and makers and Costume prop makers as well as the Running Wardrobe department.

 

As Head Textile Artist you will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of productions and experience a diverse range of creative design teams. The work you will undertake will be challenging and you will be expected to produce industry leading textile effects. Briefs in the past have included challenges such as; making dry costumes look permanently wet, art working and screen printing 100 metres of bespoke fake embroidery for a king's cloak and sampling/creating 'grey mist' surface effects. Your creative touch and mark making skills are integral for this position.

 

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Relevant professional experience in a similar role for a wide range of theatre, TV and/or film productions or gained within the education field.

  • Proficiency in all aspects of dye processes and a wide variety of textile effects, including costume breakdown and print, preferably gained by experience in theatre or related environment and/or a Diploma in Theatre Costume/Design/Textiles or other further education qualification.

  • The ability to understand, interpret and realise creative requirements in a sympathetic manner.

  • Experience in managing staff a highly talented team including freelancers, and able to use good delegation skills during busy periods.

  • Knowledge of the history and construction of theatrical costumes.
